(which is the German for “Right then!”)

I guess I can probably get this blog properly running now, because the countdown has begun proper. Today I got an email from the British Council which said that I’ve been accepted as a Language Assistant somewhere in….Sachsen!

I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about it beforehand but I think it’s gonna be OK! It’s got some really nice cities, and it shares a border with Brandenburg (meaning Berlin isn’t too far away), Sachsen Anhalt, Thüringen, Bayern, the Czech Republic and Poland meaning there’s plenty of places for me to explore.

The question now is: where am I going to be?

Will it be Leipzig, one of the most liveable cities in the world and hotspot of the peaceful revolution which ended the partition of Germany?

Or will it be Görlitz, half in Germany and half in Poland?

Or Chemnitz, socialist urban planner’s paradise and formerly known as Karl-Marx-Stadt?

Or Dresden, famous as Germany’s Coventry in World War 2 (and it has to be said that they did a massively better job at rebuilding it than we did Cov!)?

Or will it be Zwickau, a not-too-bad looking little place whose name has been tainted by a Neo-Nazi terror cell that was based there?

Regardless, I get the feeling it’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Bring on the Auslandsjahr!
